Director's Profile

Prof. Bhola Ram Gurjar holds a PhD in the area of Environmental Risk Analysis from India's premier technological institution IIT Delhi followed by Postdoctoral research on air pollution and its local-to-regional-to-global impacts at Max Planck Institute in Mainz, Germany. He is on lien from IIT Roorkee where he has been a Professor (HAG) of Environmental Engineering in Civil Engineering Department and a Joint Faculty in Centre of Excellence for Transportation Systems.

At IIT Roorkee, he has also served as Interim Director of DRDO Industry Academia - Centre of Excellence, Dean of Resources and Alumni Affairs, Head of Centre for Transportation Systems, and Head of the Max Planck Partner Group for Megacities and Global Change. He is on the Board of Directors of IIT Roorkee Development Foundation. Prof. Gurjar has more than 32 years’ progressive professional experience in industry, teaching, training, research, and consultancy.

He is among the leading academicians and researchers who have worked extensively in the domain of urban (megacity) emissions, air quality, health risk assessment, climate change and environmental sustainability related issues of scientific as well as policy nature.

This is reflected in his several international collaborations, highly cited research papers and feature articles (> 5000 citations), and editorship of international journals. He has (co)authored more than 200 publications including 12 books and one patent. He has developed two popular NPTEL online courses i.e. MOOCs, namely “Sustainable Transportation Systems” and “Air Pollution and Control”.

Prof. Gurjar is a Fellow of (i) The Institution of Engineers (India), and (ii) International Society for Energy, Environment and Sustainability, and Life Member of (i) Indian Association for Environmental Management, and (ii) Indian Association for Air Pollution Control. As a part of professional outreach, he has served the Roorkee Local Centre of The Institution of Engineers (India) as Honorary Secretary and Chairman.

As a member, he is serving in several national committees, e.g., (i) National Knowledge Network, National Clean Air Program (NCAP), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, (ii) Environmental Services Sectional Committee (SSD 07), Sectional Committee of Bureau of Indian Standards, (iii) National Working Group (NWG)-5 to work for the Study Group (SG)-5 on Environment and Circular Economy of the International Telecommunications Union-Telecommunications Sector (ITU-T), (iv) Higher Education, Skill Development and related Services (SSD 04), Sectional Committee of Bureau of Indian Standards.

Under the Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching Scheme of Govt. of India (Ministry of Education), he has undergone the Leadership for Academicians Program (LEAP) – a flagship Leadership Development training program organized by IIT Bombay.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions in the environment related fields, Prof. Gurjar has received several awards and honors – a few of them are listed below:

  • 2018 Best Theoretical-Oriented Paper Award, Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management, Environmental and Water Resources Institute, USA.
  • 2015 Eminent Environmental Engineer Award, conferred by the Environmental Division Board of the Institution of Engineers (India) during 31st National Convention of Environmental Engineers.
  • 2014 Eminent Engineers Award, by the Uttarakhand State Centre (Dehradun) of The Institution of Engineers (India) in recognition of his significant contribution in the academics and research areas related to air pollution emissions, air quality and health risk assessment.
  • 2014 ASCE State of the Art of Civil Engineering Award for “Climate Change Modeling, Mitigation, and Adaptation,” by Honors & Awards Program Office, American Society of Civil Engineers, USA.
  • 2011 National Design Award in Environmental Engineering by National Design and Research Forum (NDRF), The Institution of Engineers (India).
  • 2010-11 and 2007-10 Highly Cited Author; Elsevier’s journal Atmospheric Environment.
  • 2004 START Young Scientist Award, an international award from the Scientific Steering Committee of the global change System for Analysis, Research and Training (START), Washington, D.C., U.S.A.
