Provided extension services to 156 polytechnics implementing the Scheme of Community Development through Polytechnics in Northern Region initiated since September, 2009 in the areas of need assessment survey, skill development training programmes, application of appropriate technology, technical and support services and awareness programmes. Department has undertaken number of national and international research and development projects in field of rural sanitation, water management, agri-waste management and organic farming.
The department has been participating in “Unnat Bharat Abhiyan” since 2014. It selected five villages in Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh and worked for various technological interventions in selected villages like Choukpuri, Agra, Simalkheri and Mukrandpur in collaboration with RVIT Bijnor. During various camps and workshop, 130 smokeless chullahs were constructed; 8 low cost smoke tree kitchen were constructed and demonstration and training on rural technologies were organised during 2014 to 2019. In 2017, Honourable Governor S N Naik honoured Prof. U N Roy for his initiatives in Bijnor. In year 2015, the department started weekly organic farmers market in its campus. After successful experiment of weekly market it was further supported by Chandigarh Administration and the weekly organic farmers market was given space near Sukhna Lake. This experiment of weekly organic farmers market in Chandigarh halted in increasing the income of about 30 farmers of Punjab, Haryana, HP and Chandigarh from Rs.7000/- per month to 31,000/- per month from 2016 -17 to 2019 - 2020. Now this weekly market is organised at Punjab Agro Department Office on every Saturday. Department has been organising trainings, workshops, seminars and educational programs for the farmers, entrepreneurs and managers of FPOs and NGOs. In 2024, the department has started Ph.D programme in rural development as NITTTR Chandigarh has been awarded “Deemed to be University” status under distinct category by UGC and Ministry of Education Govt. of India.
Enriched with diversified experience gained over the years and well developed infrastructure and learned faculty, Department of Rural Development of NITTTR Chandigarh, with the support of other specialised department of the Institute, is capable and eager to undertake short-term training programmes as well as collaborative or independent projects and research and development with government, semi-government, NGOs and industries aimed at synergistic rural development in the following fields:
