The department of computer science since its establishment in 1982, progressed steadfastly to its present status of being reckoned as a leader in Computer Science and Engineering education. The department started with a humble beginning in the year 1982 with computer hardware such as BBC Machines, VAX, PC-XT, PC-AT, PC-286, PC-386, PC-486. The department is currently having three Computer Laboratories with approximately 25 high-end desktop computers with in each laboratory. Besides this the department is equipped with high end servers and related networking equipment to provide the internet connectivity in the whole institute.The department also maintains the wired and wireless connectivity in the institute buildings, hostels as well as residential campus. Various software related to Multimedia, Web Application Development,Network Simulation, Digital Signal & Image Processing, Databases and other Application software are available with the department.

The department is actively involved in conducting short term training programmes in the upcoming areas such as Mobile Computing, Open Source Technologies, Wireless Networks, .Net Technologies, Cloud Computing, Web Security, Network Security, Cyber Crimes and Forensic Tools, MATLAB Programming, Scilab Programming, Computer Networking with CCNA etc. for the faculty and staff of Polytechnics and Engineering colleges. The department also offers Master of Engineering (Regular & Modular- Industry Oriented & Practice based) in Computer Science & Engineering for the sponsored teachers of Polytechnics, Engineering Colleges, Officials of Directorate of Technical Education & industry professionals. Further the department also offers Ph.Dprogramme in the area of Image processing, Wireless Network, Mobile Adhoc Networks, Network Security, Cloud Computing etc.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

LONG TERM PROGRAMMES

The department offers industry-oriented and practice-based Master’sDegree Programme of 2 years in Computer Science and Engineering, duly approved by AICTE and affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh. The department offers this master degree programme on regular and modular basis.

Recognizing the need to provide professionally trained teachers and administrators for the technical education system and also to offer professional development opportunities to working technical and training personnel in the industry, NITTTR Chandigarh started offering Master of Engineering Programmes since 1992. The focus of M.E. Computer Science & Engineering is to make the students employable in India and abroad, to develop the ability of research, to enable the students to progress in collaboration with industries and other technical institutionsfor their research prospects.  Above all to provide an opportunity to show team spirit in working leadership skill, communication skill and management of human resources.

  • Master of Engineering Programmes (Modular)

Towards facilitating quality and qualification enhancement of faculty in technical institutes who hold a Bachelor’s degree in their respective disciplines and aspire to enhance their qualifications, the institute designed and developed a new path breaking system and approached AICTE and Panjab University, Chandigarh for approval of Master of Engineering Modular Programmes.  With approvals secured, the department also started offering the modular programme in M.E. Computer Science & Engineering since 2005.

In addition to short term courses, the department offers one/two week summer/winter schools sponsored by AICTE, New Delhi and in-country programmes in collaboration with Colombo Plan Staff College (CPSC) for Technician Education, Manilla, Philippines. The department conducts national  and international seminar/conferences every year on the upcoming technologies. 

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

The department has a core software development committee  to develop software for the requirements atthe department and institute level. The various projects completed are as:

  • Modules for certificate printing, NCTEL,  Feedback form from Modular students
  • Website Design and Development
  • Software Development for various consultancy projects.
  • MIS for Community Development through Polytechnics (CDTP) scheme.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

The department bagged three projects.

1.) Project entitled “Emergency Vehicle Pre-emption“ has been sponsored by Department of Science and Technology and Renewable Energy, Chandigarh Administration
Status : Granted

The Department along with Electrical department received a grant of Rs. 2 lakhs for this project to provide continuous movement for ambulances in emergency situations(2016-2017)

2.) Project entitled “Making Building Accessible to PWDs” and “Making Websites Accessible to PWDs” has been sponsored by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Status : In Progress (likely to be completed by Mar 2017)

The Department along with Civil department received a grant of Rs. 79 lacs from Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for carrying out various accessibility related works under SIPDA (scheme for implementation of Persons with Disabilities ACT).Under the project the institute will provide barrier free environment in all the buildings of the institute    like   lifts for vertical conveyance, renovation of toilets, construction of Ramps etc.  There will be various accessibly features in the institute website which will help the PWDs to access institute website. Institute will also set up a resource centre for the PWDs with various software applicable to them.

3.) Project entitled “Establishment of Cyber Security and Forensic Training Facility for Technical Teachers Training” has been sponsored by Ministry of IT, New Delhi.
Status : Completed on 31.03.2016

The department has received grant of Rs. 45.65 lacs from Ministry of Information Technology to establish a Cyber Security Lab.  Under this project the department will provide training in various topics of Cyber Security to teachers of Polytechnic and Engineering Colleges as well as hands-on-experience on open source forensic tools.  The duration of the project is 2 years.

CONSULTANCY PROJECTS

The department handles various consultancy projects in collaboration with industries and technical institutions. The department provides 6 weeks and 6 months Industrial Training to the students of polytechnic and engineering colleges in the following subjects Networking, VB.Net, ASP.Net, Linux Administration, Advanced Java, Matlab/Scilab programming. NETWORK ADMINISTRATION

The department maintains and coordinates internet services to entire institute, i.e.,

    1. Wired and Wireless connectivity
    2. Maintaining 1 Gbps Internet Connectivity, provided through NKN, Project by Government of India.

Maintenance of computer and other peripherals, website and intranet server is looked after by the department. Also, the department coordinates online submission of the whole institute details in AICTE Web Portal every year.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT

The department has produced a large number of instructional materials both print and non-print, for the benefit of teachers and students of technical institutions. They are mentioned below:

PRINT

To mention a few of the important materials, they are : Digital Signal Processing, CloudSim simulator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Php and Mysql,  Java, Visual Basic etc.

NON PRINT

Apart from the print materials, the department has also produced about 25 video films on various topics pertaining to Computer Science and engineering, CDs on E-commerce, VB.Net, Linux, Java, Active Server Pages etc.

FACILITIES AVAILABLE IN THE DEPARTMENT

  • The department has one laboratory cum classroom and one theory classroom for M.E students of Computer Science and Engineering. The laboratory cum classroom is well equipped with computers with latest configurations and interactive board (Eyeris). The LCD projectors are fixed at each lab.
  • The department has set up a cyber security lab for providing training on Cyber Crime and Forensic tools to Polytechnic and Engineering College teachers.
  • The department has a server room equipped with 6 servers (IBM, HP Brand), Switches, Racks etc. The department is handling Proxy Server, Web Server, Mail Server, and other servers for different project purposes.
  • The department has licensed software of Adobe CS suite, Visual Studio .Net, Network Simulators, Wireless sensor Network kits for research work for ME and Ph.d candidates and also they are used in Short Term Courses.
  • The department also has a cell for hardware maintenance. All the computers and networking equipment of the institute are maintained by the department.
  • The ME students of the department is working with Akash Tablets and working on various projects. The department is the Akash Coordinator of IIT Bombay.
  • The department is equipped with CCNA Academy bundle for providing CCNA training to the outside students. The Dept. has 4 CISCO Certified trainers

The lab is equipped with 20 latest configuration PC’s (HP Desktop i7, 3.4 GHz/4GB/500GB with TFT monitors / Windows 8) with internet facility. The Lab is equipped with ICT Devices for conducting ICT Mode (through Google Hangout/A-View/PeopleLink video conferencing tools) short-term courses on various technologieslike Open Source Technologies, Cloud Computing, R Language, Big Data Analytics, Windows Server 2000 Administration, Android Programming etc. and for running M.E. Classes.

Cyber Security Laboratory

Cyber Security Lab has been established under the project "Establishment of Cyber Security & Forensic Training Facility for Technical Teachers Training" sponsored by DeitY, Minsitry of IT, Govt. of India. There are total of 16 PC's with latest configuration duly fitted with LCD projector, motorized screen and multimedia digital podium, two Monosek Servers for the research purpose.All the computers are having internet facility and the Lab is being used for conducting ME classes, research work and various short term courses on Cyber Security using open source technologies and on other emerging technologies in Computer Science and Engineering discipline.

IBM Software Lab for Emerging Technologies (Room No. 102)

The lab is equipped with 22 PC’s with latest configuration (i7 PCs with 8GB RAM and 500 GB HDD), internet facility and with necessary softwares (Qualnet, NS2/3, MATLAB/SCILAB etc.). The Lab wasestablished in collaboration with IBM India Pvt. Ltd. andtraining for ME. Students, Ph.D. Scholars and Faculty and Staff of the department was organised on IBM Bluemix software, IBM CE - Enablement Program – Application Security Management using IBM Rational App Scan, IBM CE -  Foundation course on Big Data using IBM Infosphere Big Insights.

  • One LCD Projector ,Projector screen and wall mounted white board.
  • One free standing Electronic Lectern with high sensitive built in interactive 19”monitor having 1280*1024 resolution with 3.3Ghz Processor and 3 MB cache.
  • One interactive Touch Screen having display area 1860.48 *1046.52mm with 3820 *2160 pixel.

4.) Cisco Academy and Network Lab

The lab is equipped with 15 networked computer systems with internet facility andstate of art facilities such as CISCO Routers (Cisco2911 Integrated Service Router (ISR), Qty-03 ), Switches (Cisco Catalyst 2960-X-24P, Qty-03), Wireless Access Point and Simulator, UPS 10 KVA (APC).

Support Centre is equipped with OTDR and Accessories, Digital Multimeters, LAN Testers, Power Meters, Source Meters, Punching Tools, Climping Tools, Connectors, UTP Rolls, Wireless Access Points, Splicing Machine, Essential Tools for Assembly and Disassembly of PCs

Research and Innovation Lab

This lab is equipped with networked computer systems with internet facility. This laboratory is equipped with Matlab, Scilab, Qualnet Simulator, Cloudsim , NS2 etc.for the research purpose. This facility is exclusively being used by M.E and Ph.D scholars.
