The department of Electronics & Communication since its establishment progressed steadfastly to its present status of being reckoned as a Leader in Electronics & Communication with the sanctioned faculty strength of One Professor, Two Associate Professors and Three Assistant Professors. The department is actively involved in conducting Post-Graduate Course on Regular & Modular modes Industry Oriented & Practice Based Master of Engineering in Electronics & Communication Engineering for the sponsored teachers of Polytechnics, Engineering Colleges, Officials of Directorate of Technical Education and Industry Professionals at Regional and National Level in the country. The department also offers Ph.D. Program in the area of Electronics & Communication Engineering. The department conducts need-based short term courses in the emerging areas like Wireless LANs & Computer Networks, Advanced VLSI Design & Digital Signal Processing, Wireless & Mobile Communication, Digital & Data Communication, Embedded & Digital System Design, Artificial Neural Networks & Fuzzy Logic, Optical Fiber Communication and Image Processing etc. to update the knowledge and skill of faculty and technical staff of Polytechnics and Engineering Colleges. The department is also involved in conducting Induction Training Programs through ICT in the Northern Region.

  • To offer continuing education and training programs in the field of Electronics and Communication Engineering for the faculty and staff of the technical education system.

The major activities of the department are grouped as :

1. STAFF DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

(i) LONG TERM PROGRAMS

The department offers Industry-Oriented and Practice-based Masters Degree Program of 02 years affiliated with Panjab University, Chandigarh in Electronics & Communication Engineering duly approved by AICTE as follows:

  • Master of Engineering Program (Regular) with intake of 19 students per year

Recognizing the need to provide professionally trained teachers and administrators for the technical education system and also to offer professional development opportunities to working technical and training personnel in the Industry, NITTTR, Chandigarh started offering Master of Engineering in Electronics & Communication Engineering. The focus of M.E. in Electronics & Communication Engineering is to enable the students to progress in collaboration with industries and other technical institutions like CSIO, CDAC, PEC etc. for the Research Prospects.

  • Master of Engineering Program (Modular) with intake of 40 students per year

Towards facilitating qualification enhancement of teachers in technical institutes, who hold Bachelor’s Degree in their respective disciplines and aspire to enhance their qualifications, the institute designed and developed a new path breaking system and approached All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi and Punjab University, Chandigarh for approval of Master of Engineering as Modular Program. With the approval secured, the department started offering the program in M.E. in Electronics & Communication Engineering.

PROGRAMME EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

PEO1

To develop technical knowledge and skills in the area of Electronics and Communication Engineering at post-graduate level.

PEO2

To develop ability to undertake research and development in the area of Electronics and Communication Engineering.

PEO3

To develop generic skills such as life-long learning, creativity, problem-solving, communication, teamwork, leadership, as well as professional ethics and values.

Programme Outcomes (POs) are:

  • Ability to understand, apply, analyze and synthesize existing and new knowledge related to Electronics and Communication Engineering.
  • Ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems.
  • Ability to design a system, process, component etc. as per specifications.
  • Ability to use modern engineering tools, including software related to Electronics and Communication Engineering.
  • Ability to undertake collaborative research in multi-disciplinary areas.
  • Ability to understand professional and research responsibilities,contemporary issues as well as the impact of engineering solutions on the society.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to continuously update knowledge and skills as per changes in the discipline, technology and world of work.
  • Ability to apply the principles of project planning and management, Total Quality Management and Technology Management for managing projects in Electronics and Communication Engineering and multi-disciplinary areas.

The department offers need-based and customized Short Term Staff Development Programs of one or two week duration at Regional and National Level for the faculty and technical staff of Polytechnics and Engineering Colleges in the new emerging areas to fulfill the objectives and mission of the Institute. DSP & Soft Computing Lab.

Advanced Digital Signal Processing

Soft Computing lab is equipped with 30 desktop computers with internet facility. These systems are loaded with Matlab 2013b software which contains number of tools such as communication tools, simulating 3D dimensions, neural network toolbox, image processing toolbox, signal processing tool, image processing tool, signal processing toolbox etc. Lab is also equipped with image analysis software, ADSP -2181 based development board ,universal Microcontroller development board, universal prototyping board (Mechatronics) and trainer kit based on 8051

Advanced Digital Communication

Communication lab is equipped with 30 desktop computers in the lab with internet facility. Most of these computers are loaded with Matlab software, Qualnet software for GSM, UMTS network simulation. The lab is also equipped with HFSS Antenna design Simulator, wireless mobile communication kit (CDMA, GSM & Bluetooth).

Embedded System Design

The Embedded Systems Laboratory has 25 networked systems. The Laboratory has following items for R&D facilities :
Embedded Kits

  • ARM Kit
  • Universal development board (with accessories), UPS 5 KVA, Spartan(R)-6FPGA, Advanced VLSI Proto Board, Multimedia projector and HP 8300 core 17 desktop computers. This laboratory has set of softwares like MATLAB, XILINX 9.2, Flow code V6 Professional 20 Users License.

VLSI

The VLSI Laboratory has 20 networked computers with Internet facility. The Laboratory has a set of softwares like TCAD, Microwind , Matlab   Design & Simulation of combinational and sequential circuits using Front End VLSI tools like Xilinx ISE, ISE simulator or Modelsim simulator, Back End VLSI Tools like Microwind, Mentor Graphics, Synopsis, Cadence.

This lab has 11 networked systems with internet facility. This lab has various softwares like wireless sensor network, library with Zigbee control, Crossbow wireless sensor network kit, WiFi application kit (IEEE 802.11b), advance Zigbee development system , wireless sensor networking development and RFID Application development system.
